BPG was founded in 1989 with the ambition of delivering specialist magazines of the highest order into specialist markets. The company’s first title was the Shooting Gazette, launched as a quarterly then bi-monthly, before becoming the UK’s number one game shooting monthly and in 2004 was sold to publishing giants IPC.
The success of the magazine was based very much on the philosophy of the company, taking full advantage of new technology to deliver a high quality product to a special interest market. Whereas many magazines in this sector had up until then opted for low budget productions and modest editorial values, BPG opted for a different route. And it has also made a policy of employing people of obvious ability and enthusiasm for both their work and subject matter. On the editorial side a number of journalists who trained with BPG won editorships with major publishing houses before reaching 25, the last three advertisement managers have all been head-hunted by other companies, and our designers have won awards for their work. In other words, although we specialise in specialist areas, we have the very best of personnel – it is a busy and creative working environment.
In 1999 we added two more important consumer titles in Your Cat and Your Dog. Both are clear market leaders and Your Dog has just registered a record ABC figure of over 31,000 copies per month. Again edited by two outstanding journalists who are recognised as respected authorities in their fields, the magazines go from strength to strength.
Then in 2005 we relaunched Horse & Pony magazine, a title which first appeared 30 years ago, and for many, many horse and enthusiasts was part and parcel of their childhood. The magazine is now fresh and re-invigorated, focusing clearly on its target market of 7-11 year olds, from whom the feedback has been tremendous. And copy sales too have exceeded all expectations.
Again the magazine has an editorial team and ad manager who are mad about horses, but coincidentally all very experienced at their work skills. It’s a winning combination.
The Scottish Sporting Gazette & International Traveller is a lush biannual which was acquired seven years ago, and is edited by the BPG MD Mike Barnes, one of the best known names in countrysports publishing circles, and the title enjoys an influential worldwide reader-base.
Fieldsports, the latest addition to the magazine line up was launched at the end of 2006. A big 164 page package with a limited number of advertisements which offers more scope to present big authoritative articles alongside genuinely original and entertaining comment, all accompanied by the very best in sporting photography.
BPG has embarked on an exciting project which will take the success of our printed brands online. Having assembled a strong team, throughout 2008 we will be fully committed to launching several new sites and fully updating some of our existing ones to fully reflect the dynamic publishing environment of the internet.
In addition to the publishing the magazines, BPG also undertakes all manner of booklet, newsletter and advertisement design and production. Its design team are ideally placed to be able to deliver work that is sympathetic with the subject matter.
Located in the historic market town of Stamford, BPG enjoys delightful town centre surroundings from where it looks forward to an exciting future.
